Every now and again I think “omg…. Darry gets up before the sun in the morning and gets back after midnight….. Ponyboy’s all about the beauty in the mundane like sunsets and sunrises but he doesn’t see either because of his job…… that’s so sad…… that’s so deep………”
And then I remember he’s a roofer. An outdoor job on an elevated surface. He probably sees them more than Ponyboy does

my dad is insisting on going up into the attic to fuck around with attaching a board to the roof (stupid plan, not the correct way to fix a slight dip in the roof, should just call roofers) and there's a bunch of loose insulation up there, 50 years old or so, that could have asbestos in it. and he has simply decided that this doesn't matter (in his usual manner of first saying 'no there isn't' without knowing, and then when challenged moving onto the next excuse, then the next, until just breaking down in angry insistence that it's fine just because), and is absolutely insisting on doing it anyway. and I am at a bit of a loss of what do to besides like set up a couple of air purifiers near the attic trap door and hope for the best.

It really sucks for me, an introvert, to have a nosy, retired, talkative neighbor who just absolutely can not allow me, a young introverted autistic woman, to do yard work in the peace and quiet of xer own racing mind without coming over and offering unsolicited advice about everything under the sun, and even proselytizing at one point.
Guy. Go away. Stop providing reinforcement for all my anxieties about being perceived in public.
Today I was almost done with the project I was working on, and it started sprinkling rain. I figured since I had maybe 15 more minutes including cleanup I'd just ignore the rain unless it actually started pouring, in favor of just finishing.
Well he comes home, calls something from across the way about sugar melting in the rain, I decide to take the most charitable read from that and decide he doesn't think I'm an idiot who had just spent the last 5 minutes completely unaware of the rain, and say something like "ha ha, yeah." You know, bare minimum to not outright rudely ignore him.
He stands by his truck for a second and calls out something about if I stay out any longer I'll be playing in the mud. Once again, as if I had no natural warnings about the rain. Or it being his business at all what comforts or goals I prioritize. I tell him I'm almost done, as if I need to justify what I do with my own property to him.
He says one final thing about the storm proper being a few blocks away and moving in, and finally goes inside. Of course he comes out again to ask if I want him to bring his leaf blower over, as if that will help distribute the dirt I dug up evenly across my lawn more effectively than the rake I pulled out and also just kicking it around.
I know he's being ~nice~, I know he's being neighborly and what I'm sure he believes is polite. But I am a gen z woman and he is a boomer man, and every interaction that he initiates before I initiate even a single one increases the inherent creep factor at an exponential rate. I want to be able to get things done outside or walk to work without being ensnared in a two hour conversation.
Hes trying to help me identify the plants in my garden, explaining perennials vs annuals and I just am not at the stage where I'm trying to figure that out right now ya know? He said something about the milkweeds, "it is a weed, you know."
Oh thanks. I didn't know that. What with the word Weed being in the name.
I tell him I knew about that one, that they're good for the butterflies, I'll take care of the ones that are in non optimal spots, stop touching my plants,
oh speaking of ambushing me on my way to work- the balls on this man to essentially harass me for hours the previous night, to see me walking in the morning looking straight ahead, with-a-purpose quickness that comes with cutting it close already to be on time, with A Massive Chef Knife Handle Sticking Out Of My Purse, and decides it's a good idea to stop me again for chit chat, I just can't even.
Hes still alive, unfortunately. Also unfortunately I guess I'm going to have to take a slight detour if I want to avoid him when I'm on a time crunch. The unfortunate comes from the fact this detour would take me along a bright, loud, busy road when I would generally rather take the shorter, tree shaded, side road to work instead.
I could just tell him to fuck off (not with those exact words ofc) but I'm worried about creating Friction ad since he's a talker and gossiper I don't know what kind of issues down the line would be caused by rebuffing him completely. But maybe that's my anxiety talking idk.

Excerpt from this story from Mother Jones:
When a man with painful cystic acne came to dermatologist Eva Rawlings Parker for help in a Nashville clinic, she couldn’t prescribe him doxycycline or minocycline, two medications she’d typically use to treat this condition. This is because the man was a roofer, says Parker, and these medications would have impacted his ability to tolerate heat.
Parker’s patient was far from alone. Other common medications for physical health, like beta blockers, can impact people’s ability to handle heat. Many medications for mental health do, too.
Conventional wisdom tells people with conditions that make them unusually vulnerable to the sun, like the autoimmune disorder lupus, or are on medications that lead to heat sensitivity, to avoid staying outside when the sun is at its strongest.
But for the one-third of US workers who must spend regular time outdoors, that advice bursts into flames. For some, such as farmworkers, hours and hours of heat exposure, with minimal or no reprieve, are just part of the job. Increasing heat waves and more frequent wildfires point to the need to find real solutions for outdoor workers—and highlight how labor and climate change are intertwined.
Edward Flores, faculty director of the Community and Labor Center at the University of California, Merced, specializes in the conditions of low-wage and immigrant workers in California. He says the need for heat safety policy reform is acute. “We know that workers have been dying,” Flores says, “because of chronic conditions that accumulate through heat stress over many years and decades that lead to shorter life spans.”
Parker, the dermatologist, is acutely aware of how heat can trigger or worsen skin problems. She is co-chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s group on climate change and environmental issues, and was an author of a 2023 review on the ways climate change can contribute to dermatological issues, including triggering flares of conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa—which causes painful lumps deep in a person’s skin—and skin cancer.
Workers do have some legal rights to breaks and water, depending on the locale. California, Oregon, and Washington are the only states that mandate those breaks. And roughly half of crop farmworkers have no legal work authorization. That lack of legal status, and the threat of deportation, gives many workers reason to fear complaining about working conditions.
In July, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed a new set of rules which would help protect more than 36 million workers from heat-related illness or death. The proposed OSHA rules would require employers to monitor their workers for heat exhaustion symptoms, provide adequate water and shade, designate break areas, and provide mandatory rest breaks, among other things.

some silly little headcanons i have specifically for my au of the outsiders that i felt the need to write down all in one place.
after their parents died, darry made a deal with the state that he could keep his brothers as long as they're able to support themselves
so darry got three jobs, roofer, contractor, and uh...yk what.
two-bit who was almost 18 started working at a grocery store cause i said so
dally managed to get a job as a bartender at bucks
and ofc soda and steve work at the dx
johnny and pony don't have jobs yet cause the others don't want them to because they're "too young"
(when really they're 14 and 15 and are in fact old enough)
when everyone else is at work, johnny and pony stay home and watch movies. like binge watch.
they once thought they could handle horror movies.
they couldnt.
they were latching on to darry when he got home.
dinner at their house is chaotic.
they're yapping over each other and darry's trying to get them to settle down so that people don't report a noise complaint on them.
how to bribe the curtises?
not money.
not gold.
these big backs only listen when there's dessert involved.
even after a 12 course meal, if they're hungry in the middle of the night and sneak out to the kitchen, there will most likely already be someone there
steve and soda used to share a room.
keyword: used to
they would stay up all night giggling and shi
same thing with pony and johnny.
so steve and pony swapped rooms.
darry regrets it cause now soda and pony cant stop giggling, but he can't stop it so he just gave up
so therefore dally and two bit share a room.
dally isn't thrilled
two bit yaps
dally needs sleep or he'll be grumpy in the morning
but two-bit contradicts him saying that dally is gonna be grumpy either way.
and then dally comes at him about still living in the house as an adult and then teases him for his lack of ability to pull
dally would try to find a way to get darry to let him sleep in his room if darry weren't such a heavy snorer
(dally snores too)
(but he refuses to accept it)
darrys the type to need his morning coffee before speaking to anyone
dal just doesnt want to speak to anyone
ponys a night owl.
they'll tell him to go to sleep and pony will be like "just one more chapter"
but he keeps reading and suddenly the birds are chirping
johnny tried to protest this once back when they shared a room
to say he'll stay awake too unless pony goes to sleep
he fails and ends up falling asleep.
pony gives him a pat on the head and continues to stay awake until the sun shined through the window.
pony then proceeds to sleep the day away
(same)

I don't think i can explain to you the near-boundless giddy excitement I got form seeing EJ on that creeptober list of yours. (If it's not obvious, he might just be my favourite, snort) Looking forward to all of em tho ~!!
He’s GREAT. I used to have so many head cannons about him since so little is actually known. This story is actually based off my hc about his origin. I hope you enjoy!
Creeptober: Day Three
Eyeless Jack’s Obsession
Yandere! Eyeless Jack x AFAB Reader
CW: horror themes, stalking, blood, pain, death (not of reader), hypnosis, breeding, etc
Eyeless Jack was once an ordinary spirit. He lived his afterlife the way most spirits do. Bored and alone. However, that all changed when you bought the mansion in which he resided.
You moved in without ever seeing the place in person, which you soon regretted. The entire place gave you a creepy vibe that made the pit of your stomach twist into knots. At all times it felt like something was watching you. Stalking you. Filling every room with its presence.
And he was. Jack was following you no matter where you went in the house. It was like you were a drug and he was an addict. Being around you made him feel almost alive again. And the more alive he felt, the more he could interact with the physical world.
Soon he was moving things. Taking things from you. You noticed but kept trying to brush it off. You hoped thought that you were going a little crazy. After all, you worked a remote job and lived in this big creepy house all by yourself. You were supposed to fix it up and sell it for your aunt, who hadn’t lived here in decades, but it was hard. Even with the money she gave you, you struggled to make up the remainder.
Eventually though, you did, and construction started. You still lived in the loft like area that was once an attic while the crews worked downstairs. Unfortunately for the construction workers you hired, Eyeless Jack wasn’t as enthused with the intrusion into your space as you were.
On the very first day, a ladder fell over, nearly killing one of the roofers. He was fine, but he refused to return as he said he was pushed. The next time a ladder fell, a few days later, someone did die.
You heard the screaming and the sound of a body hitting the concrete. It took you a few minutes to rush downstairs. Terror filling your body. Did someone really just die on your aunt’s property? Holy fuck. How would you be able to keep living here? That poor man and his family.
While you were panicked, Jack was ecstatic. He hoped now you would send all these other people away so it could just be the two of you again. All he wanted was to be able to have you all to himself again. As he watched you panic, and the other workers calling the cops or trying to scrape their dead friend’s body off the concrete, he realized that he had blood on his hands.
For a few moments, he just stared at it. Vague memories of being alive and kicking blood from a cut on his finger drifted through his mind, but nothing solid. It was too long ago. Too hard to remember. Yet, his tongue darted out to flick across his palm.
The blood in his mouth solidified some of the memories, and made him feel almost alive. In a frenzy, he licked the blood from both of his hands, the coppery and metallic taste filling his mouth. His eyes glazed over and all he could think of was getting more blood. How much could he touch then? Could he touch you?
The next few days were a blur for you as you worked with the company and your home owners insurance to work out the logistics of the worker’s accident. Everyone saw that he just fell. The ladder was properly secured. No one was messing with it. He was acting responsibly. He wasn’t impaired or intoxicated. It was a freak accident.
But you knew. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you knew. It was because of that disturbing presence in the house.
You decided that you wanted the renovations done as quickly as possible, so after getting some of your money back from the previous company, you hired another. And another. And another. Every time, someone died. It was horrifying. One man came to your house just to survey the land and came across a missing roofer. He looked like he had been ripped open with a man’s bear hands, and, to both your and the surveyer’s horror, all of his organs were missing.
That night you called your aunt and told her that you were done. In the morning, you were leaving. She didn’t even try to protest after you told her everything that had happened. Jack, having over heard your conversation, was furious. He couldn’t lose you.
Over the past few months, he had undergone a transformation. Every bit of human flesh he consumed made him more solidified. More tangible. More alive. However, his face has become mutated and disturbing. Where his eyes once were, were just empty chasms, dripping black blood. His skin turned to a disturbing shade of ashy gray. So, to prevent your terror as much as he could, he carved a mask out of a piece what used to be a blue shelf. Now there was no reason for you to rebuff his affection.
When he made his way up to your room, you were on your laptop. In seconds, he tossed it from your lap, and your phone was pushed off the bed. He was on his knees on the foot of the bed, leaning over you, caging you in with his arms.
A scream welled up in your throat as the black holes bore into your eyes, but a muttering voice soothed the fear away. Your brain turned fuzzy. It was like you couldn’t think for yourself. He tilted his head, which you mimicked.
“A pretty puppet,” he purred, stroking the side of your face with one of his hands.
You couldn’t think of anything. It was like his eyes had drawn every thought or ounce of individualism from your skull. When he told you to take off your clothes, you did. When he told you to lay down, you did. You couldn’t see his mouth, and his voice seemed to come from everywhere, but you knew that it was him talking.
“Make sure your pussy is good and wet for me,” he instructed, and you obliged.
You began to finger yourself, using your other hand to play with your clit. The soft whimpers and moans that escaped your lips had him gritting his teeth behind his mask. He wanted to take you so badly, but he also wanted it to be perfect for you. His little morsel. He wanted to be apart of you. For you to be apart of him. Forever.
Once your juices began to drip onto your sheets, he finally cooed at you to stop. You did. Despite the frustration and throbbing of your pussy. He was still caging you in with his arms, his form nearly engulfing you. After a moment of watching you squirm, your neglected cunt clenching around nothing, he eased back. Unzipping his pants, and pulling down his boxers, his hard and throbbing cock was shown to you.
Once his hypnotic gaze was broken, your mind began to flood back to you, and the sight of something so massive made you try to scamper back on the bed. However, your loving Eyeless Jack realized that his hold had been broken and grabbed your face, forcing your gazes to lock. Once again, anything in your mind seemed to melt away.
“Spread your legs,” he instructed. And you did.
He slowly slid inside of you, watching your face intensely as it contorted in pain and pleasure. He stretched you out to the point that you felt like you’d burst. Your walls were still throbbing with need, forcing you to clench around him. Clearly to his immense pleasure.
“There we go. Mine. So good for me,” he moaned as he finally sank his cock deep inside of you, his eyes flickering away from your face for just a moment to see how your stomach extended from his cock.
When his gaze returned to you, he saw tears in the corner of your eyes. “Don’t worry. You’ll get used to me, won’t you?” he promised, cupping your cheek almost tenderly again. You nodded obediently.
He was only slow for a few thrusts before losing what little of his kind remained. It was clear he wanted to care about your pleasure, but the decades of death and isolation left him desperate for the comfort and warmth your pussy brought him. The tip of his cock slammed against your cervix repeatedly, making you wince. He muttered out apologies, but never stopped. Never slowed down.
His cock ripped you slightly, blood beading along your tender lips. He muttered out another apology about how he’d make it up to you, and all you could do was whisper out an “okay”. It took hours for him to finish, and when he did, he slammed himself deeply inside of you, his cum pumping directly into your womb.
“There we are. Now I’ll always be apart of you,” he smiled, pulling up his mask to press a kiss to your forehead before disappearing.
As your mind came back to you, you winced at the pain, but wondered with a twisted hunger if he would come back for you.

anderson construction and landscaping had been parked outside your door since you returned home from university. as if the summer couldn't get any hotter, the business owner works overtime in your area. anderson is collecting new, loyal clients of your neighbors, cementing her permanence in your life for the next few months. what's to come of your girlish crush when she keeps showing up?
𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜. 18+ (mdni); age-gap, young!reader, older!abby, butch!abby, slow-burn, suggestive language, thoughts of infidelity, ellie ft, smoking/drinking, mentions of parents, nickname: sweetheart, and modern au.
𝚊𝚗. yall! life has been crazy. your girl is finally back. I'm so sorry I love you all for loving me. lets geeettt etttt. x (this chapter is loosely proofread)
♫ 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝. change your mind by moonchild ♫
I kick the duvet off my bed onto the floor, leaving my skin frozen as the blue sky begins to make an appearance like an oil painting on my bedroom walls. My throat is dry and my muscles are tight. I cried before I went to bed but this time it wasn’t over the business, it was about me. When was the last time I cried about me? A deep yawn allowed a stretch to be released from my stiff body. I don’t remember falling asleep here but my back thanked me for it. What happened yesterday? In-house client consultations weren't unpopular just not as common as they used to be. Most days, folks want a Pinterest-made bathroom cutting out the middle price of my creativity. Like I say, who am I to complain?
My phone was crowded with email notifications of applicants. I was one step closer to taking a huge load off my shoulders and that felt good. So good, that I brewed a pot of coffee because I had the time. I reached under the kitchen sink and among the disorganized cleaning products a Mr. Coffee Pot was birthed. I had switched to a fancy automatic dispenser but there’s nothing like a cheap hot drip. I perch my lips on the edge of my mug before opening my mouth. Across the yard, through the window is my neighbor Nora, the lemon lady, as I call her. Just about this time of the year, she would leave a small brown crate of lemons on my front porch. Our conversations were short and awkward but she was a pretty lady to look at. She was heading to work in a blue dress that suctioned her body and extenuated the light brown fro flourishing on her scalp. I wonder how she's doing, my wonder would never be strong enough to open the door and ask that.
Hair and teeth were brushed promptly before opening my laptop and scheduling interviews. The most recent application was from the woman who stood in my house just last night. My first instinct was to pick up my phone and send a photograph with a witty sentence accompanying it. However, I refrained and stared at the email. I could hear her voice describe the elements of her resume. It was a sweet delusion and ghostly experience to recall her rasp but it eased some tension to know I could possibly have her around more.
I didn’t know what to do with the time I had magically acquired this morning. The possibilities seemed vast and the anxiety I felt from the thought of breaking my routine made me just sit in silence. A silence that was paired with fantastical grandeur from a childish part of my brain. Daydreaming about her was a great way to begin my morning.
Over to the loudest street on the west side with two clients already secured, I felt accomplished with the direction both projects were going. A turn down the road revealed a paramedic hauling away a gurney. Without worrying about the parking situation I pull the keys out of the ignition and jog over to the scene. All my men were crowding around the truck and I pushed through them to see pale bone breaking through the flesh of my roofer. I winced at the sight and looked up quickly to meet the eyes of the victim.
“Boss,” He chuckled in a stupefied state. “ I fell down.”
We all shared a moment of happiness that the injury didn’t result in any other damage. I took pride in knowing workers comp was going to take care of him for the healing. If it ever did. My back pocket floods with vibrations and I finally interrupt them.
6:55 am: paramedics? what’s happening abby?
7:04 am: hello? are you okay?
7:05 am: I don’t see you. where are you?
As I begin to type and move out of the road to allow the paramedics to leave then I see her, standing on the sidewalk with her house shoes on and draped in a short robe. I could see a bit of relief on her face as I approached her. The closer I got the more nervous I felt but she didn’t have to know that.
“Gosh, I’m sorry.” She brings her hand to her forehead.
“So, you were worried?” I poke.
She chuckles lightly, “My mom made me come outside and check.”
“Oh right.” I laughed to hide my embarrassment.
“Well, I’m going back to bed.” She mentioned but her feet didn’t move.
“Long night?”
“Longest. It should be illegal to get into arguments after 10 p.m.”
Her girlfriend was stressing her out again and now that I looked closer, her under eyes were puffy and darkened. She kept her up all night, hopefully not arguing about something concerning me.
“I agree, that’s a good rule.”
“I’ll see you later, okay?”
I nod and turn back towards my truck, wishing we were going in the same direction instead of the opposite one.
Well into the afternoon I saw her glint in her front yard tending to the blossoming flowers. The old, form-fitting grey sweatpants were dirtied on the knees with brown and green alike. I was leaning against the truck and secretly watched her clean her forehead with her matching shirt, darkened by sweat. I couldn’t stop thinking about how to approach her about the application. Once she had enough digging done she sat in the grass on her behind, leaning on her hands, with her head tossed back.
I mustered the courage to step away from the car and got a clear view of the most toned parts of her body. My mouth became dry and I had to find the moisture again by lolling my tongue over my lips. She lifted her hand to wave slightly and then to hide her eyes from the sun, even though I am sure she knew it was me. My shadow covered her with a temporary coolness under the fiery sun to which she audibly sighed.
“Hi, sweetheart,” I smile.
She opens her big eyes and follows my belt buckle up to my face. She looks glorious in that position, dominant yet completely able to be persuaded. The curves on her body were muscle as much as they were fat. A glorious mixture that made me crave her more — especially when I’m not supposed to.
“Ms. Anderson,” She giggled playfully.
“I saw your application, post-graduate life got you desperate?”
I wasn’t much of a tease toward women I liked, but in the moment it felt good to watch her face contort in a false sense of temporary anger.
“Don’t think I’d be a good employee?”
I shrug at her comment but inside the vision of her in business casual clothing, debriefing clients, and leading weekly meetings painted my cheeks red. A woman in charge of me was something I didn’t often relish enough. The facade I give off is the opposite of what’s expected but if she gains my trust… Suddenly, she stood up with her hands clasped around her hips breaking my lewd thoughts. The tips of her fingers slightly perched under the fabric of her loose top.
“I’m not sure,” I grin. “Isn't that what the interview determines?”
She rubs her glove up the side of her forearm, leaving traces of soil on her skin. The sunshine reflecting from her body is nearly blinding. I fought off the urge to clean away those imperfections on her.
“Does this mean I have an interview?” She perked up on her heels in excitement.
The motion triggered a reflex to wrap my hands around her hips and pull her inward as I bent her backward for a passionate kiss. I unknowingly took a step forward as the screeching of a '98 Cadillac Seville pulled quickly into the driveway to separate us. The car hummed and scrapped against the pavement causing me to wince. It was her girlfriend, Ellie. I should move. I should lift my feet and walk back down the street and drill a nail into some wood, but I don’t.
Ellie slams the door to her car with her greasy hair tucked behind both ears and a slouch on her spine. Her eyes avoid my face and I’m glad that they do.
“Woah, you’re all dirty,” Ellie smirks.
“Gardening.” Her one word answer even stings me.
“Let’s get cleaned up, hm?” Ellie’s hand gently clasps her elbow but she pulls away.
“After I’m done talking to Abby. Why don’t you go up to my room and wait for me?” She asks, sweetly.
I felt a bulge of confidence wave through my body knowing Ellie was going to listen because of my presence. She cuts her eyes towards me briefly before walking up the driveway to disappear into the house.
“You okay?” I ask.
“We’ve been arguing more and more since I moved back home. She’s so sensitive,” Her face crinkles in distress.
A genuine, heavy pool of laughter escapes my throat. The way she contorted her face to say sensitive showed her disgust of Ellie which I was overly pleased to know. I cover my mouth slightly until she grins too.
“I shouldn’t even be telling you this.” She adds.
“It’s fine. I’ve been in your position before.”
“And what happened?”
I inhale. “We broke up and it was messy.”
An oh slips her lips filling the silence between us. I pulled my mind from the clouds to stop its wandering tick of floating into the past. I’ve had many girlfriends but my final relationship, five years ago, was the most mentally taxing years of my life. ‘We broke up and it was messy’ was a simple reduction to a very complex situation.
“I’m sorry to hear that Ms. Anderson.” Her fingertips rise gently to my arm. The glint in her eyes showed a sincerity that I had never seen before. Most people say sorry to things as a formality but she actually meant it.
“You’re young, these things happen, you have time.”
“I hope so.” She mutters as she removes her gloves and tosses them angrily into the grass.
“All right, sweetheart, if you need me you know where to find me.”
She mouthed a humble thank you and followed behind her girlfriend.
The team was disoriented, tired, and lazy upon returning from their first break. Losing my finest roofer was going to cost me time and money. With such short notice, it wouldn’t be particularly difficult to find someone willing to fill in. Men in this industry are always hopping from job to job but I want someone reliable and will stay.
I chuckle in disbelief of what I’m about to do. Contact Ellie, to be my new roofer.
12:00 p.m. Bad timing to ask you something?
She walked towards my truck as I forced a chip into my mouth. I brush the crumbs off my chest and check my face in the rearview as she boldly pulls the handle to sit in the passenger's seat. She avoided eye contact with me and slammed my door with an angry force.
“Hello,” I say, chewing off the last bit of my food.
“Was your text a joke?” She snaps, her voice holding a begrudging tremble.
“A joke? No, I would never, not at all I was—” My words were tumbling over each other breaking my cool facade. She did not seem phased by my current display.
“You want Ellie to work for you.”
The statement was supposed to come out more like a question but there was no rise in tone at the end of her sentence.
“I don’t have time to hire someone and test them out. You said she was good, right?”
“She’s one of the best.” She groaned.
“Well, to be honest, I’m desperate.” I sigh a little more pathetic than I want.
She turns her head towards me and melts into the cushions. Her legs widen to touch the door with her kneecap. She twisted her head upwards to admire the black upholstery on the ceiling, exposing her kissable neck. I feel a zing of warmth travel from my cheeks to my thighs and I twitch at the unfamiliar feeling. One that I haven’t felt in ages. I run a lingering thumb against the seam of my pants and relish the sensation I feel through them. She turns and looks at me, leaving me frozen. Those eyes were dark with a desire that awakened a sleeping part of me.
Why did my body suddenly feel like a flowering opening upon first bloom? I was no teenager discovering the female body for the first time but why did it feel like that?
“Fine. I’ll tell Ellie to call you.” Absentmindedly she tugs her lip into her mouth and I cross my ankles because crossing my legs would be too obvious.
“I owe you.” My voice sounds strained as I exhale into the air.
In her bedroom, I had my tape measure in hand with a small notebook and golf pencil. The boxes in the room had been cleared since the last time I was here. I had to redo the farthest bathroom wall three times as a tender need pressed against my zipper. The pressure of the metal alone was making my legs wobble. When was the last time I was truly aroused? Her perfume coaxed the walls in the same sickeningly sweet warm musk that followed behind her. My concentration was drained.
"Ms. Anderson?" She asked lightly in the door frame.
I swivel my head like a cartoon character, not particularly shocked by her presence but at my lack of bodily control. "Hey."
"Just wondering how you're doing?" She asked.
Her gardening top had become soaked around the collar and the cuff under her arms. Those sleeves were now folded inward displaying a vast spread of skin. I was going to be thinking about this interaction all day.
"Done." I lie.
"Good, I'm overdue for a shower," She giggled as she walked into the room in what I saw as slow-mo. "See you tomorrow."
"Thanks again. I seriously owe you." I repeat.
"I know," she smiles, starting to lift the hem of her shirt up. "Just make sure I have an interview next week and we're good."
The last thing I saw before leaving the room was a rousing glare, over her right shoulder, in my direction.

How much Darry and Soda would make modern day and if it would be enough to pay for at least the three of them: (note this may not be incredibly accurate and while yes I did do research while calculating this shit it wasn't super in depth! feel free to correct me on any and all mistakes you notice and feel free to also give your own opinions!! Much love!)
Starting with Darry's:
Before I get into number this is all assuming that Darry works exclusively the hours allotted to him while missing no work, he'd have a 5 day work week at 40 hours which is standard practice in the United States, except for his part time job which he'd be working 25/h a week (i talk about this more later just continue reading) also I'm not giving them any kind of insurance. Sorry! Lol!
Starting salary of a roofer in Oklahoma is $14/h with the average being around $15/h. Assuming this Darry will be getting around 30k a year. I'm going to be generous and say he works for a good company and has a strong union so I'll give him a end of year bonus as well ($200-$800)
His weekly pay would be around $550-$600
This would be taxed though! Using a taxing calculator (bc I'm not doing all that math babeee) He'd be payed around $500 a week.
Darry also canonically has a second job! Though it is never really talked about, not even mentioned whether it's part or full time. I'm just going to assume, generally, that it is probably a part time job that pays minimum wage. (I'm aware that there are many popular hc's as to what this job is I'm ignoring those lol) now I don't live in Oklahoma but I do have personal experience with working part time and it fucking sucks. They have you working only slightly less then a full time employee so they do not have to give you full benefits. It is an incredibly fucked up and exploitative practice.
Something to note is that Oklahoma allows part time employees to be payed half minimum wage the first 90 days of employment when under the age of 20. I do not think I will include this in the calculation because even though Darry would be 19 at the time of his parents death I think he would be 20 not long after and I do not care enough to look into this law to include it in my calculations! Just wanted to mention it because?? What the fuck Oklahoma?
Anyway, part time would have Darry working 25 hours a week for $7.25/h which would be around $180/week. After taxes he'd make $160/week getting him to $660 a week.
Finally, what everyone was waiting for.... doordash fucking driving baby. Considering he lives in a populated area I am going to be generous and say he manages to get around $20/h from doordash driving. Assuming he does this on the days he doesn't work part time (so the other 15 hours) he'd make a whopping 16k extra a year OMG!!
As for any money he'd earn from the state for guardianship of Pony and Soda: Idk! It's kind of confusing trying to figure out Oklahoma giving shit out for this because fostering and guardianship are two dif things and I'm almost certain Darry would have Guardianship over his siblings, not fostering them. So I'm just not including it: he may have received a check upon first becoming their guardian but since that is a one time thing I'm not going to include it in my final calculations (i know this is kinda contradictory for giving Darry a bonus for his roofing work but IDC IDC IDC IDC I AM NOT PUTTING THAT MUCH EFFORT INTO THIS (NOTE I FILLED OUT A MOCK W2 FORM TO GET A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF WHAT DARRY'S TAX RETURN WOULD BE BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I CARE))
All of the above considered: Darry is making $960 a week. Wow!
Now for Sodapop!
Soda I'm just going to copy paste what Darry's theoretical part time job would be because it's almost time for me to go to bed and I couldn't find any special rules for 16< year olds, so he'd be working 25 hours for $7.25 which after taxes is again $160
In total him an Darry combined are making a good healthy $1120 a week on average. Probably more if you consider Darry going insane with doordash/overtime! Overall a good $4480 a month
GREAT NOW TIME FOR EXPENSES!!
Expenses Include:
Mortgage payments
power bill
water bill
natural gas
car payments (maybe)
car insurance (maybe)
fuel
food
phone payments
internet bill
probably more I can't remember off the top of my head
OKAY NOW explaining the maybe's rq
You can just, not pay for car insurance. It's illegal, but when you're poor it's not like you can really care about the legality of certain things. Sometimes, it's eating vs car insurance, y'know? Especially because Darry is only 20, that shit is going to be expensive. And the car was def under his dad's name previously so he also def doesn't have any history. I'mma be generous though and say that he does have CREDIT history, which following my own car insurance premiums: my man is going to be paying like, $400 a month. and trust me, I'm being generous here. This is also for liability only. crazy right? With that considered, if I can not get Darry's salary to work with the rest of his expenses I'm saying he's driving without insurance. Hope you understand.
Now for the car itself, it might be payed off already might not. Again it's almost time for me to go to bed so I"m not willing to double check the book to see if car payments are ever mentioned. If they are I'll come back and fix this another time but for now. I'm not including it.
As for the gas for this theoretical truck? I'm going to put it from $250-$300 a month based off of what Reddit car owners said on how often they have to get gas for their own trucks. Great!
OKAY NOW FOR THE REAL EXPENSES! The average cost of utilities in Oklahoma, Tulsa specifically, is $270 a month for electricity, like $130 a month for natural gas, and for water $100 a month. Now you're probably saying, "Paya, isn't that a little high?" to which I'd say, they have 4 (presumably more) other boys coming around almost everyday. SO I feel it's fine to rate that shit on the higher side of things.
Before I forget: the mortgage payments!
This one is kinda fucked! I have no idea when the Curtis parents bought the house in canon. If it was after, or before Darry was born, etc. Because of this you can kinda just make hc's for this. The reason I say this is because obviously the housing market now is VERY different from the one in the 40s-60s which is when they'd have had to buy the house in cannon. In fact, I'm not even entirely sure they own the house in canon I'm just assuming right now! Like, if you're making a modern au: feel free to say that they're renting! Like who really cares about it? I'll even calculate it here for you so you have a frame of reference: Assuming the house is at least 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom it's gonna be around 1.5k a month. If you want to say they're paying a mortgage though, I'm going to assume based off the little data I could find of average home cost in 2004 (I'm assuming the house was bought around the time of Darry's birth) we're looking at somewhere between 150k-250k. I'm going to low ball it though because I think Oklahoma housing prices are generally cheaper and I'm going to assume they'd go for something affordable over something large. So I'll say 175k! Average interest on a home loan in 2004 was around 6%, with a 20% downpayment Darry will be paying 1k a month for the mortgage. Not that bad!
Phone bill is p cheap around 100$ feel like you may be able to play around with this. Like maybe they're paying for Johnny? Who knows not me I want to go to bed!
Food is like so fucking expensive now tbh. I pay $300 a month on grocery shopping a month for my household. Assuming Darry is purchasing food for himself, his brothers, and a little extra for the gang I'm going to put his grocery bill at around $500 a month. I think I'm lowkey low balling it, but I think he'd be a good bargain shopper. Btw, don't ask if he qualifies for food stamps! Because he doesn't!
internet bill is significantly cheaper going to be around $50 a month, as for services like live streaming and other things, we're gonna say it's all pirated. no one is paying for that shit when you can get it online for free! (Personal hc: Steve is a fucking amazing pirate and can get you literally anything you ask for.)
Final cost of living for my boys, not including school supplies, school/extra curriculars/or clothing: $2400 - $3350
Ending conclusion: If Darry works 80+ hours a week and Soda helps out with his part-time job they have more then enough to pay for almost all living expenses. Tell me where I fucked up! Thanks. Btw according to the shittily done w2 I did for Darry he'd get almost 2k in tax returns; i most def fucked something up but I'mma accept it despite that.

Tumblr media
redesign of my zadr fankid - Kim, i made her in 2016, and uugh decided to see how i would design her now. so here she is
old arts and info under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think when i first made she was supposed to be more like very sweet but introverted (not in a shy way but more like she just not interested in socializing) with her main hobbies being video games and parkour (which is like....so random....i think i just was into roofers videos back then, so i decided what she would be a roofer as well idk).
but in 2018 (i think?? hard to say at this point) i changed her personality to be more extroverted, bubbly and silly - and she became robot inventor. like she would be rlly good at robotics and being completely stupid in everything else.
she also loves waffles and bears. she had a brother but it wasn't my oc so he is not here. and when it comes to her relationships with zim and dib... well... i don't remember 👍🏼 i know she was closer to her bro than their parents tho. and she most likely hang out with gir a lot.

Warmth
Made(Started + completed): August 13, 2024
Requested? No
Summary: Darry’s had a long day at work, but he melts whenever he’s in your arms. All of his stress seems to go away each time.
Contains: Fluff, Darry x Reader, no use of Y/N, Reader’s gender is unspecified
Warnings: Use of sweetheart, next-to-nothing for dialogue, short and sweet
Tumblr media
Darry had just come home from his stressful job roofing. His back ached with soreness from the harsh physical labor. He called out an, “I’m home!” when he walked in the door. He slipped off his boots and made his way into the living room, seeing you, his lover sitting on the couch. You were absent-mindedly watching TV with a somewhat bored expression on your face - that was, until you saw the movement of him walking in from the corner of your eyes. Your gaze softened and you smiled. Darry loved seeing that smile of yours.
“Hey, sweetheart.” He greeted you, padding over to sit next to you. A weary sigh escaped him when he sat down, his shoulders heavy with stress and a dull aching pain.
A few minutes later, he reluctantly got up, stepping into the kitchen. You followed behind him, watching as he filled up a glass with water. Darry felt a pair of arms snaking around his waist and a body press against his back. He knew it was you. He melted into the embrace, leaning back against you. He placed one of his large, rough and calloused hands - hands that were rough from the physical labor of his work as a roofer - onto your forearm, gently rubbing his thumb along the skin. His shoulders relaxed in contrast to them previously being tense as he basked in the comforting warmth of your body pressed against his.
How he loved your hugs. . .

Curtis parent headcanons but they lowkey suck
• Going off of the names SE Hinton gave them Karen Josephine Curtis & Darrel Curtis Sr
• THE high school sweethearts ever
• Karen actually isn’t from Tulsa, her family moved there from California the summer before junior year
• They had math together and that’s how they met
• Okay and hear me out on this one, Karen came from a wealthy family 😱(I know, I know shocking)
• It was Karen, her mom, her dad, and her little brother Cooper
• Darrel sr came from an underclass family, his dad and mom and 4 sisters, he was the baby of the family
• No one and I mean NO ONE called Darrel by his first name, he was solely adressed by his middle name, Parker (I refuse that he has the same middle name as Darry jr)
• Once the two started dating he started calling her by her middle name as a pet name, so they were Josie and Parker all throughout highschool
• Her parents did NOT like him, hated that they were dating, hated that he was lower class, hated him
• Anyways the two dated all throughout highschool and eventually eloped when they were 18
• Josie’ family entirely cut contact and she couldn’t see her brother anymore
• Parker’s parents were angry but eventually forgave him
• They had Darry a year later. he was not planned in anyway shape or form (sorry Darry 😔)
• Josie named him because throughout her and Parker dating she had always said she loved the name Darrel and he would always laugh it off, he was fine being just Parker, so when the baby was born she named him Darrel almost to prove a point
• All throughout the pregnancy and first few years of Darry being born they lived with one of Parker’s sisters
• Eventually Darrel was able to get a job as a roofer (foreshadowing) and they were able to afford a house of their own with some help from his family
• Soda was born a few years later when they were more prepared to have kids and then a few years later they had ponyboy
• Josie had to work throughout pretty much all of this, she was a checker at a grocery store
• Their life stayed the same throughout the next few years until the boys started making friends
• By the time darry was 15 they had around five boys always in the house at once
• Josie loved it, she had always wanted a big family
• Parker just missed how loud bigger family’s could be
• Their house basically became the safe haven of the neighborhood, no one hated the Curtis parents, cops, upper-class adults, kids, no one
